What is a scapelike? Games in the RuneScape tradition
Updated November 6, 2026
A scapelike is an original game made in the tradition of RuneScape. Players use the word the way others say "soulslike" or "roguelike": not a copy, but a game that keeps the parts of RuneScape its players stay for.
What makes a game a scapelike
- Many skills, levelled by doing them. You get better at fishing by fishing. Levels are slow, and the long climb is the point.
- Gathering feeds crafting. Ore becomes bars, bars become gear, logs become arrows or fires. Most skills depend on others.
- A shared world. Other players are in the same world, and what one gathers another can buy. Most have a player market or trading.
- Few shortcuts. Progress comes from time put in rather than from a level cap reached in a weekend.
Many also borrow the look and controls: point-and-click movement on a tile grid, a small inventory, and simple or retro graphics. Those are common, not required.
Scapelikes, private servers and idle MMOs
The three get mixed up, and GrindIndex keeps them on separate lists.
- Scapelikes are new games with their own world, code and art.
- Private servers (RSPS) run a copy of RuneScape itself on someone else's server. What an RSPS is.
- Idle MMOs keep the skills and the shared economy but play themselves while you are away. What an idle MMO is.
Things to check before you start one
- Stage. Many scapelikes are made by one person or a small team and are in early access or testing. Progress may be wiped before release.
- Platforms. Some run in a browser, some need a download, a few are on phones.
- Other players. A shared world needs people in it. A game's Discord and how recently it posted an update say more than its trailer.
Each game page on GrindIndex shows its stage and platforms where known, its Discord size, recent updates, and its votes on other toplists.
