An idle MMO is a game that keeps playing while you are away and puts you in a world with other players. You pick a task, such as mining or fighting a monster, and your character keeps doing it, often for hours. You come back to collect, decide what to do next, and trade with everyone else doing the same.
Idle MMOs and idle games
Most idle games are single-player: numbers go up, and nobody else is there. An idle MMO adds the parts that need other people:
- A player market, where prices come from what players gather and craft.
- Guilds or clans with shared goals.
- Chat and leaderboards, and often group content such as raids or world bosses.
Many are built like RuneScape, with skills from 1 to 99 and gathering that feeds crafting. Melvor Idle made that idea popular as a single-player game; the games on our idle list have other players in them.
Where they run
A lot of idle MMOs run in a browser tab, some as plain text. Older players know these as PBBGs, persistent browser-based games. Others are on Steam or phones, and many share progress between devices.
What to check before you start one
- Offline progress. Some keep working for a day or more while you are away, others stop after a few hours or only while the tab is open.
- What money buys. Look at the shop before you put time in: cosmetics, time savers, or power.
- Whether the market is players'. A player-run market is what makes the shared world matter.
- Stage. Many are early access or alpha and may reset progress.
