What is an RSPS? RuneScape private servers explained
Updated November 6, 2026
RSPS stands for RuneScape private server. It is a server that runs its own copy of the RuneScape game, set up and run by players instead of by Jagex. You connect with a client the server provides, play on its own accounts, and its world and economy are separate from the official game. Private servers are not run or endorsed by Jagex.
Revisions
A server is built on one version of the game client, called its revision, and that decides which era of RuneScape it looks and plays like. The ones you will see most:
- OSRS-based servers use Old School RuneScape's current content: its bosses, raids and items.
- 317 is a client from the mid-2000s, long the most common base, often heavily customised.
- 718 and other 2009 to 2012 revisions bring that era's interface and content.
- Classic servers recreate RuneScape Classic or a specific year. Some are open-source projects that aim to match the original exactly, such as 2009scape and 2004Scape.
Kinds of server
- Economy servers keep items scarce and progress slow-ish, closest to the real game.
- Spawn and PK servers let you create supplies and are about player-versus-player fights.
- Custom servers add their own bosses, items and systems on top.
Most offer several XP rates and account modes, such as ironman, and many run seasonal or league-style resets.
Staying safe
- Use a password you use nowhere else. Never your RuneScape, email or Discord password.
- Get the client only from the server's own website. A client is a program that runs on your computer, so a copy from a stranger is a risk.
- Treat donations as gone. Money spent on a server goes to its owner, and when a server closes or wipes, what it bought goes too.
- Be wary of servers built around gambling or selling items for real money.
Telling a server that will last from one that will not
Servers open and close all the time. Signs of one that will be around: it has been online for a while, its website and Discord show recent updates, and players outside its own Discord talk about it.
Each private server page on GrindIndex shows whether the server is online now, how long ago its domain was registered, its Discord size, and its votes on other RSPS toplists side by side.
Why servers ask you to vote
Toplists rank servers by votes, so servers reward votes with in-game items. On GrindIndex votes cannot be bought, fake votes are revoked, and other toplists' numbers are shown but never counted. How ranking works.
